Black Hibiscus AKA “Black Dragon”

These flowers bloom to over 8 inches across and has a more scientific name of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis hybrid. This flower was actually given an award by the American Hibiscus Society. During the year of 2005 this group named the flower the #1 hibiscus flower for that year.

The thing that sets these flowers apart from their counterparts is the darker centers that sometimes get so dark that they are actually black. This is where they get their name the black dragon hibiscus flower. The plant can grow up to 4 feet tall, but usually around 2 feet tall it starts to grow outwards instead of up into the air more.

Blue Heart Lily Flower

This is a gorgeous white and blue colored lily with the blue being in the middle of the flower. This isn’t one of the rarer flowers in this article, but it is incredibly pleasing to the eyes and unique in its own way.

Caring for this flower means keeping the seeds in between 18 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius. This will take you around a half a month during the germination stage of development.

Jade Vine

This plants scientific name is Strongylodon macrobotrys and is one of the rarer plants on this list. This flower is also often called emerald vine and turquoise jade vine as well. It is actually closely related to beans, which is incredibly interesting.

It was found and recorded first in 1841 in the Philippines. This plant can get around 3 meters long on average with nearly 100 total flowers on each plant.

This specific plant needs to stay as close to 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius. It is generally grown across a tall structure in order to give it somewhere to climb up as a vine. It takes the plant around 2 years to grow to full adult size.

Chocolate Cherry Sunflower

This plant is known to grow up to around 7 feet tall and has a very fitting color scheme to its given name. It is a dark earthy red mixed with black giving it a very gothic décor feel to the flower. These rich colors on the blooming flower stay out and about for around 4 weeks on average.

These flowers are good at grabbing the interest of pollinating animals if you make them an addition to your garden. It takes these plants around 2 months to grow into maturity and is very sensitive to frost.

Chocolate Cosmos Flower

Cosmos atrosanguineus is the scientific name of this plant and they are found natively in Mexico. In 1885 these flowers were introduced onto the flower scene. Oddly enough it was a British seeding company that first recorded this flower into their catalogue.

This flower grows up to 2 feet tall usually and on average are around 6 inches across. It is said to smell like chocolate which provides some good information as to why the flower is named what it is named. Around 6,000 to 8,000 feet is the elevation that this plant is usually found at in nature.

Black Bat Flower

Tacca chantrieri is the official scientific name of this flower and looking at it we can see where they would have gotten that name from. This plant is actually in the yam family surprising enough. That is crazy to think about. The flowers get up around a foot wide, but the long flowing whiskers that stem from the middle of the plant get up to around 2 feet long. At around 2 to 3 feet tall and 2-foot-long whiskers, these plants are tall, long beauties.

These generally grow in India, Cambodia, and Vietnam up to around 4,000 feet of elevation. These are actually one of the rarer flowers on this list and are surely worth the effort to grow on your own. Show them off to your friends and family. They also will fit in extremely well with gothic décor.

This flower is also known as Silene regia by its more scientific way of speaking. These are actually nearing extinction. This flowering plant gets up around 5 feet tall and is found in many states across America. Among these states are Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri. There are more states that it is found in, but Missouri is the state that it is found in more than any of the others. It is found in grassy land and woods such as the side of the road and horse/cow pastures.

Man made fires and the decreasing of areas in which the plant can grow are creeping in on this plant’s chances at surviving. It is classified as “at risk” and is on its way into the territory of extinction.
